STEMI Care Bangladesh is headed by two world-renowned cardiologists who have developed the STEMI Bangladesh protocol after decades of first- hand experience in treating STEMI.

Prof. M.G. Azam

Prof. M.G. Azam MD, FSCAI. is Consultant and Interventional Cardiologist and Head of Unit-05 Cardiology at National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Dhaka, Bangladesh.

He worked as a Senior Consultant in Labaid Cardiac Hospital from 2007 to till date and as a Fellow in Cardiology in Rostock University Hospital, Germany from 2011.

Since 2007, he has been working at the NICVD and Hospital, a 1250-bed tertiary-care centre. He has established a very active interventional unit in that hospital during his tenure. The department performs approximately 3,000 procedures a year which includes over 1,500 cardiac interventions (both adult and paediatric) each year.

He is the Course Coordinator for training of MD Resident in Cardiology, which is a higher speciality training program conducted by the BSMMU. He has published over 60 papers in various National and International journals and has been a faculty at many National and International workshops.

He is a fellow of the Royal college of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, Bangladeshn College of Cardiology and the Cardiological Society of Bangladesh.

Dr M.G. Azam has established STEMI Bangladesh, a not- for-profit organisation’ along with Dr Mahbubur Rahman. He is the Course Director of the STEMI Bangladesh meeting which is an international meeting focussed on STEMI care. Dr M.G. Azam has been recognised as a pioneer in research in developing STEMI systems of care in Bangladesh.

Dr Mahbubur Rahman

Dr Mahbubur Rahman, MBBS, MD, DM (Cardiology) currently holds the position of Senior Consultant of Cardiology at the Labaid Cardiac Hospital, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, Bangladesh.

After graduating in 1983 from the Grant Medical College, University of Mumbai, he did his Master’s in Medicine and Post-Doctoral Degree in Cardiology from the same University in 1991. He completed his National Board examinations in Cardiology in the same year. Subsequently he completed a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology from The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane, Australia. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians, Glasgow in 2010.

During his undergraduate career, he was a recipient of the Glaxo Medical Education Award for the highest marks in Medicine at 3rd MBBS examination. In 1992, he was nominated for the Commonwealth Scholarship by the Government of Bangladesh and was selected as the Rotary Foundation International Ambassadorial Scholar for 1993- 1994. During the Euro Paris Revascularisation Interventional Course in 2001, his presentation was adjudged the best interventional case. He was awarded the 9th Prof. Rathinavelu Subramaniam Memorial Oration Award instituted by the Association of Physicians of Bangladesh in August 2009. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 by the Dr MGR Medical University for his contribution in Cardiology by the Governor of Tamil Nadu.

The Advanced Cardiovascular Therapeutics, one of the major interventional courses held in Bangladesh, has been held consecutively for the last decade at the Institute of Cardio- Vascular Diseases, Madras Medical Mission with Dr Ajit as the Course Director.
